Pandavapuram - 1986
(The City of Pandavas)
Based on a 'magical realist' novel by Sethu, Pandavapuram portrays the two levels of existence of Devi, a beautiful 30-year-old teacher betrayed by life, alone in the dilapidated ancestral village home of her husband who has disappeared one day without leaving a word. This situation irreparably feeds gossip, irrespective of Devi's behaviour. Having rejected the advances of one of her colleagues, who then starts hating her, Devi is aware of her delicate position of an abandoned wife in a traditional society, especially in a remote village. Each day she goes to the station to await the return of someone from Pandavapuram. One day, an attractive stranger arrives at her home and narrates a lot of things about the life she has passed with her husband who left a long while ago for Pandavapuram. It seems to her that she has, thereafter, passed the night with him, but early morning, there is no trace of him. Devi returns to the station in search of her 'lover', certain of his return and assured of a 'reality' which everyone around her calls 'madness'.
