Jalamarmaram - 1999
Nirmal's father, Usman, dies of cancer caused by the presence of toxic waste in the village water supply. Usman's death is a profound tragedy affecting not only his family, but the entire village. Nirmal identifies the huge chemical factory in the village, against which his father had fought a grim battle. As his mother gets more and more involved in the movement against the factory, he increasingly finds solace in a fantasy world made out of the images from the fables his father has told him. When he goes to a carnival and sees a mermaid, a popular side-show in the carnival, he mistakes her for the real. The narrative constantly shifts from the real to the fantastic, dream and reality.
