Yanam - 2004
(Man Boat Water)
Like modern-day truck drivers, boatmen have plied the elaborate network of waterways for centuries in Kerala. These wooden sailboats were once lifelines of rural life. "Yanam" is the story of one such sailboat, narrated by the boat through folk songs, as it celebrates the inseparable and spiritual bond that unites man, his work and nature. The journey of the sailboat is used as a metaphor for the journey of life.
Bharathan and Damodharan are old boatmen who love their job and its nomadic lifestyle. On one such journey, Damodharan falls from the boat and is incapacitated. The boat makes the first detour to drop him at his home. But, as with destiny and life, several detours follow. The boat encounters characters and incidents that shape its journey.
