Born in Palakkad, Sethumadhavan graduated from the Madras University. He worked as assistant to directors like K Ramnoth, L V Prasad and T R Sundaram. He made several films based on well known literary works, like Odeyil Ninnu (Keshavadev), Mindapennu (Uroob) and Chukku (Thakazhi Shivashankara Pillai). Oppol is his best known work. The also worked in Tamil, Hindi and Kannada.

Director K S Sethumadhavan's most acclaimed work, Oppol (1980) based on M T Vasudevan Nair's story, won Balan K Nair the National award for best actor and also bagged several State awards.

The 6 years old Appu is the illegitimate son of Malu and knows her as his elder sister. When Malu marries an ex-service man, Govindan, Appu becomes intensively jealous of them. He attacks Govindan during their honeymoon. The boy runs away from the house, when Malu scolds him. When Govindan understands the truth that Appu is Malu's son, he succeeds in bringing him back home. Master Aravind as Appu dominates the film.

Oppol won the State awards for best film and the best director.
